PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To distill mercury containing a small amount of a mercury oxide from waste fluorescent powder contained in a waste fluorescent tube at low temperatures in a short time, thereby significantly reducing power consumption required for distillation and preventing components of rare earth contained in the waste fluorescent powder from changing.
SOLUTION : Waste fluorescent powder is evenly agitated in a furnace, the temperature in the furnace is heated up to 350-650°C while the pressure in the furnace is reduced down to 10 kPa or below in an inert gas or reducing gas atmosphere, the waste fluorescent powder is maintained in the furnace for 2-24 hours to vaporize mercury, and the mercury vapor is condensed in a cooling apparatus to recover the mercury.
