A ceramic Sialon material has a homogenous structure containing 20-100 Vol.-% a-Sialon (RxSi12-(m+n)Alm+nOnN16-n, ss-Sialon (Si6-zAlzN8-zOz and 0 to 15 Vol.-% amorphous and/or part crystalline granular boundary phase. The a-Sialon R is selected from the group of cations : a) rare metal earths from the groups Gd to Lu, Y and mixtures of the same, b) rare earth metals from the groups La, Pr, Sm, Nd and mixtures of the same and c) Mg.
