PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for sufficiently rapidly and selectively producing a carboxy group-containing polymer having a high oxidation degree and high molecular weight from a polymer raw material while using inexpensive hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant.
SOLUTION : In the method for producing a carboxy group-containing polymer (A), hydrogen peroxide is reacted with : a polymer having a hydroxy group or carbonyl group directly in a cyclic structure excluding a benzene ring; a polymer having an unsaturated bond, or a polymer which has a hydroxy group or carbonyl group derived from the polymer having an unsaturated bond, in the presence of Lewis acid and a compound of group VI metals in the periodic table. The Lewis acid is preferably Lewis acid having a rare-earth metal at the active center thereof. The compound of group VI metals in the periodic table is preferably a compound of at least one metal selected from among tungsten, molybdenum and chromium. The reaction liquid preferably has a pH of 1-5.
