PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an oxide superconductor having both a high Josephson plasma frequency and a high critical current. SOLUTION : The oxide superconductor has [R(M)]2Cu1O4crystal structure (wherein R represents a rare earth element, and M represents an alkaline earth metal) and its crystal form is needle-like. The method for producing the oxide superconductor is characterized by heat-treating a green compact of powder of a precursor having an atomic composition represented by chemical formula 1 : R2.85MaCubTecOx(wherein R represents the rare earth element; M represents the alkaline earth metal; a, b and c each represents an atomic ratio; and x represents an amount of oxygen) to conduct crystal growth in the needle-like form.
