PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a device and method for discriminating the type of a fluorescent tube capable of inexpensively producing and operating without breaking discarded fluorescent tubes and applying a special marking for discrimination to the tube with high accuracy such that the type of the tube corresponding to the different type of rare earth used for phosphor can be discriminated. SOLUTION : The device for discriminating the type of the fluorescent tube has at least an ultraviolet source and an apparatus for measuring a chromaticity value, and is provided with a unit for irradiating the outside of the fluorescent glass tube with an ultraviolet ray from its source, and a unit for measuring the chromaticity value of light emission of the tube by irradiation from the outside of the glass tube. The device and method for discriminating the type of the fluorescent tube are composed so that the measured xy chromaticity coordinate is displayed in the color space in which the type region of the tube is displayed in an overlapping manner, thereby discriminating the type of the tube.
