Glass (Ia) or glass-ceramic (Ib) containing at least silicon, aluminum and yttrium oxides, in which the wt. ratio between Y 2O 3 and the total wt. of SiO 2, Al 2O 3 and Y 2O 3 is at least 0.2, preferably at least 0.3, most preferably at least 0.4. An independent claim is also included for light sources with a light emitting diode (LED) and a luminescent glass or glass ceramic as above (I), which emits approximately white light when the LED is emitting in the blue or the UV range.
