A method for manufacturing fiber-optic strands, the method comprising : heating and melting a quartz-based optical fiber base material in a fiber spinning heating furnace; linearly pulling out the base material from the fiber spinning heating furnace and continuously causing the base material to cool and solidify to form a bare optical fiber; coating the bare optical fiber with a resin and forming a fiber-optic strand; and continuously pulling the fiber-optic strand while applying tension using a pulling machine. When the surface temperature of the cooled and solidified bare optical fiber reaches 100°C or less, the surface of the bare optical fiber is re-heated in a state in which the aforementioned tension is applied, the surface layer only of the bare optical fiber is caused to re-melt, the re-melted surface layer of the bare optical fiber is caused to re-solidify, the bare optical fiber is then coated with a resin, and the tension is subsequently released, whereby there is obtained a fiber-optic strand in which residual compressive stress is imparted to the surface layer of the bare-optical-fiber portion.
