PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new photochromic material applicable to a non-volatile memory, etc., and to provide the use thereof. ?SOLUTION : A rare earth complex is obtained by coordinating a photochromic ligand with rare earth ions. The structure of the photochromic ligand is changed from a first state into a second state by a photochromic reaction when the rare earth complex is irradiated with light at a wavelength λ1. When the rare earth complex is subsequently irradiated with light at a wavelength λ2, the structure of the photochromic ligand is changed from the second state to the first state. When the rare earth complex is irradiated with light at a wavelength λ3independently of the photochromic reaction, the rare earth ions emit light. The light-emitting characteristics from the rare earth ions differ between the first state and the second state in the structure of the photochromic ligand. Since the rare earth complex has the characteristics, functions as a molecular memory enabling recording, reproducing and erasing of information can be carried out with the rare earth complex by utilizing the light at the wavelengths λ1, λ2and λ3. ?COPYRIGHT : (C)2008, JPO&INPIT ?
