An organic electroluminescent element which is provided with a positive electrode, a light emitting layer that is arranged on the positive electrode, a first layer that is arranged on the light emitting layer, a second layer that is arranged on the first layer, and a negative electrode that is arranged on the second layer. This organic electroluminescent element is configured such that : the first layer contains an organic metal complex that contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of alkali metal elements, alkaline earth metal elements and rare earth metal elements; and the second layer contains an electron transporting organic compound, and at least one of an alkali metal and an alkaline earth metal.
