A multicore amplifying optical fiber comprising : a plurality of core sections to which a rare earth element has been added; an internal cladding section positioned on the outer periphery of the plurality of core sections, having a lower refractive index than the refractive index of the plurality of core sections, and having a first hole formed therein; and an external cladding layer positioned on the outer periphery of the internal cladding section and having a lower refractive index than the refractive index of the internal cladding section. Ideally, the first hole is arranged in an area surrounded by the plurality of core sections, in a cross-section of the multicore amplifying optical fiber. As a result, variation in optical amplification characteristics between each core section is reduced.
