PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To solve such problems as attenuation of ultraviolet radiation quantity and fixing of an external electrode by providing a rare gas discharge lamp not containing mercury in place of an ultraviolet light source used for sterilization, air cleaning, or the like. SOLUTION : The rare gas discharge lamp (10, 20, 30) has a glass tube (11) encapsulating a rare gas, and a pair of belt-like external electrodes (14, 15) provided at a part of the outer peripheral surface of the glass tube (11). Outer periphery of the external electrode is coated with a UV-transparent thermal contraction film (17, 27, 37) having an opening (19). The glass tube (11) is exposed in the opening (19), and the part where the opening is not provided is coated with the thermal contraction film (17, 27, 37). Consequently, attenuation of ultraviolet light irradiated from the rare gas discharge lamp can be suppressed, and the external electrodes (14, 15) can be fixed surely. COPYRIGHT : (C)2013, JPO&INPIT
