FIELD : chemistry.SUBSTANCE : invention relates to multicomponent vanadium-molybdenum oxide catalysts used for selective production of acetic acid or a mixture of acetic acid and ethyl acetate. The invention describes a catalyst and a method of producing acetic acid or a mixture of acetic acid and ethyl acetate by oxidising ethanol with an oxygen-containing gas in a catalytic reactor in the presence of said catalyst, the catalyst having the formula : MOaVbNbcTedXcOn, where : X is one of the following elements or mixture thereof : Al, P, B, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Zr, Pb, Bi, alkali or alkali-earth metals, rare-earth metals, a=1; b ranges from 0.01 to 1.0; c ranges 0.01 to 1.0; d ranges 0 to 1.0; e ranges 0 to 1.0; n is a number defined by the valence and number of elements other than oxygen in the formula.EFFECT : high efficiency of the catalyst and high output of acetic acid of up to 97% or, depending on reaction conditions, 94% total output of the mixture of acetic acid and ethyl acetate (molar ratio 1-2 : 1, respectively).9 cl, 38 ex, 1 tbl
