To provide an electrochemical cell including an electrode having improved high-temperature cycle stability, and a method for manufacturing the electrochemical cell.SOLUTION : Electrochemical cells and methods of their formation are disclosed. The electrochemical cell comprises a negative electrode including a conductive substrate, an electrochemically active material layer coated over the substrate, and a metal oxide/hydroxide coating layer, wherein the coating layer is directly located on the active material layer opposite the substrate, and the coating layer comprises a rare earth element. The electrochemical cell comprises a negative electrode, which is arranged so that the protection against surface passivation is made by reducing the growth of a passivation layer on an active material surface, and the thickness of the newly formed passivation layer as a result of decrepitation during cycling can be reduced by functioning synergistically with a silicate-containing alkaline electrolyte. The cells and methods have a special advantage, i.e. the improvement in cycle life when exposed to a high temperature.SELECTED DRAWING : Figure 1
