PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new method for the recovery of rare earth elements from a fluorescent material containing the rare earth elements as an activation component and relatively easily applicable to a wide variety of fluorescent materials. SOLUTION : A fluorescent material containing a rare earth element is added with a component vitrifiable with the fluorescent material, is vitrified by melting, and is brought into contact with an aqueous solution containing an acid, to extract the rare earth element from the fluorescent material.
