PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing a metal by electrolysis, by which a problem caused by the material transfer of a gas or solute between an anode and a cathode is restrained.
SOLUTION : The method for producing a metal by electrolysis is characterized by forming an electrolytic cell by immersing an anode and a cathode into a molten metal salt and performing electrolysis by applying an electric current to the electrolytic cell in a vacuum atmosphere to form a metal. The molten metal salt is composed of one or more halides or a mixed salt comprising one or more halides and a metal oxide. The anode may be formed from carbon, and the cathode may be formed from an oxide of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, B, Al, Ga, In, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a rare earth element, or a mixture containing the oxide. The molten metal salt may be a halide of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a rare earth element or a mixture of the halide and a metal oxide. In this case, the anode may be formed from carbon.
