PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To suppress the reduction in the reversible amount of hydrogen to be occluded caused by the occlusion and discharge of hydrogen in a hydrogen storage alloy using Mg, Ni, rare earth elements, or the like, as the main constituting elements while maintaining its characteristics of being large in the amount of hydrogen to be occluded and being excellent in high rate electrically charging and discharging characteristics, and to provide an Ni-hydrogen secondary battery in which high capacity and long service life are compatible. SOLUTION : This hydrogen storage alloy contains, as the main constituting elements, Mg, Ni and an R element (the R element is at least one kind of element selected from rare earth elements including Y, Zr, Hf and Ca), and in which crystal lattice planes with the plane spacing of 0.58 to 0.67 nm are allowed to exist. The nickel-hydrogen secondary battery contains the above hydrogen storage alloy as a negative electrode material.
