PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a structure in a discharge lamp device comprised of a high pressure discharge lamp having a pair of main electrodes inside a discharge space, a starting aid light source (UV cell) which emits ultraviolet light toward the discharge space only when the high pressure discharge lamp starts lighting, and a power supply device for lighting the high pressure discharge lamp and the UV cell, the structure being designed to allow a discharge lamp to start lighting stably, even at low voltage.SOLUTION : A power supply device generates a startup high voltage when a high pressure discharge lamp starts lighting and is thereafter transitioned to a steady lighting voltage. A UV cell emits light at the startup high voltage, but does not emit light at the steady lighting voltage. The UV cell contains at least rare gas for start-up and carbon monoxide (CO) as a luminescent material.
