A method of recovering rare earth particulate material from an assembly comprising a rare earth magnet by opening the assembly, exposing the opened assembly to hydrogen gas to effect hydrogen decrepitation of the rare earth magnet, thus producing rare earth particulate material which is then separated from the rest of the assembly, e.g. by shaking, vibration, sieving, tumbling or centrifugally. The magnet, which can be NdFeB or SmCo is demagnetised by heating or reversing the magnetic field during decrepitation. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a reaction vessel 12 with an opening which can be closed to form a gas-tight lid 20, means for separating particulate material from the rest of the assembly and means 24 for collecting the particulate material, the apparatus further comprising a shredder and a conveyor for conveying shredded assemblies into the reaction vessel 12. The separating means can be a vibratable porous container 14.
