PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a glycerin dehydration catalyst reducing formation of propionaldehyde as a by-product and allowing highly efficient production of acrolein, and a method of producing acrolein using the same, a method of producing acrylic acid, and a method of producing hydrophilic resin.
SOLUTION : The glycerin dehydration catalyst contains rare earth metal salt of phosphoric acid and a metallic element (other than rare earth metal), and the molar ratio M/(P+R) of the metallic element (M) to the phosphorus (P) and the rare earth metal (R) in the catalyst is at least 0.00009 and less than 0.5. In the method of producing acrolein, glycerin is dehydrated to obtain the acrolein under the presence of the catalyst. In the method of producing acrylic acid, the obtained acrolein is oxidized to obtain the acrylic acid. In the method of producing hydrophilic resin, a monomer component containing the obtained acrylic acid is polymerized.
