PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method capable of producing high-performance activated carbon having a large specific surface area under excellent productivity, safety and operation stability, by using an organic resin as a raw material, and by using together a specific agent as an activator, and to provide the high-performance activated carbon having the large specific surface area. SOLUTION : The activated carbon has a specific surface area of 400-2, 000 m2/g, and preferably has a mesopore volume of ≥0.16 mL/g. The method for producing activated carbon includes a process for mixing the organic resin with at least one kind of alkaline earth metal compound selected from a group comprising oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and organic acid salts of an alkaline earth metal, and for heating and firing them in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
