PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To attain satisfactory recording/reproducing characteristics in a magnetic recording medium with a magnetic recording layer processed in a prescribed pattern. SOLUTION : A magnetic recording layer includes recording regions which are regularly arranged in the in-plane direction and contain cobalt and platinum and non-recording regions which are arranged between the recording regions and contain at least one kind of light rare earth metal selected from the group consisting of yttrium, lanthanum and cerium, and boron.
