PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for using an Sm2Co17-based sintered magnet to a motor exposed to hydrogen atmosphere. SOLUTION : In a rare earth sintered magnet, comprising 20-30 wt.% of R (R is Sm or more than one kind of rare earth element containing 50 wt.% or higher of Sm), 10-45 wt.% of Fe, 1-10 wt.% of Cu, 0.5-5 wt.% of Zr, and the remainder of Co and inevitable impurities, a rare earth sintered magnet, having a compound organization layer where Co and/or Sm2O3and/or CoFe2O4in Co or Fe exists on the surface of the rare earth sintered magnet is used in hydrogen atmosphere under a pressure exceeding 1 MPa. An Sm2Co17-based sintered magnet can be used in a motor over a long time, even in a hydrogen atmosphere without causing hydrogen embrittlement. COPYRIGHT : (C)2008, JPO&INPIT
