PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a cerium-based abrasive high in an abrasion speed and capable of achieving a polished surface in which the occurrence of abrasion flaws is reduced as much as possible.
SOLUTION : The cerium-based abrasive contains F, an rare earth element Ce, and one kind of rare earth element (RE*) selected from 14 kinds of rare earth elements Y, La, ..., other than Ce. The contained amount of F in the abrasive is 5.0-15.0 mass%. The percentage of the mass of cerium oxide occupying in the total rare earth oxide-equivalent mass is 48-90 mass%. The percentage of the mass of the oxide of RE* occupying in the total rare earth oxide-equivalent mass is 8-50 mass%. The percentage of the total mass of CeO2 and the oxide of RE* occupying in the total rare earth oxide-equivalent mass is 98 mass% or more. The contained amount of a rare earth element selected from 13 kinds excluding the rare earth element RE* from the 14 kinds of Y, La, ..., is 0.5 mass% or less in the percentage of the mass of each oxide in the 13 kinds of ORE occupying in the total rare earth oxide-equivalent mass.
