PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an evaluation method capable of detecting, by a simplified method, the fact that Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film of a high coercive force film built into a magneto-optical device is divided into many magnetic sections. ?SOLUTION : The method evaluates the magneto-optical device (optical isolator 7) including the Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film maintained in a magnetically saturated state even when no external magnetic field exists. When light is emitted to the Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film and transmitted light quantity is measured, an external magnetic field smaller than the coercive force originally possessed by the Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film is applied by a permanent magnet 8 in the direction opposite to the magnetization direction of the Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film. Goodness/badness of the Bi-substituted rare-earth-iron-garnet film is determined based on optical characteristics (insertion loss and isolation) before and after applying the external magnetic field measured based on the transmitted light quantity. ?COPYRIGHT : (C)2007, JPO&INPIT ?
