A fluorescent material that can be substituted for conventional rare earth-activated sialon phosphors and oxide phosphors, and an application for same are provided. The phosphor of the present invention comprises inorganic crystals including at least La, Si, Al, nitrogen (N), and M elements (M being at least one kind of element selected from a group comprising Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb), and, if necessary, oxygen (O). The host crystals for the inorganic crystals are LaSi9Al19N32 crystals or solid-solution crystals of same, which have been activated by the M element.
