Provided is an R-T-B type rare earth permanent magnet which can attain high coercive force (Hcj) without enhancing the Dy concentration of an R-T-B type alloy and in which magnetization (Br) reduction, which is due to the addition of Dy, can be suppressed to attain excellent magnetic characteristics. An R-T-B type rare earth permanent magnet consisting of a sintered body which includes both a main phase that contains R2Fe14B as the main component and a grain boundary phase that has an R content higher than that of the main phase, and in which R is a rare earth element component that contains Nd and Dy as the essential elements, and the grain boundary phase comprises first and second grain boundary phases that are different in atomic concentration of Dy.
