The present invention relates to a method for treating asbestos, in particular asbestos cement, in which the asbestos is subjected to a reaction at a temperature of at least 125 °C and a pressure that is higher than 0.2 MPa inside an aqueous medium including : an acid other than hydrofluoric acid; phosphate ions; one or more salts of one or more elements of the rare earth family; and fluoride anions, by means of which the asbestos is eliminated by acid dissolution and a phosphate such as rhabdophane, which is solid and can be reclaimed as a luminescent material, is simultaneously formed.
