PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing a wear-resistant member having high strength, high toughness characteristics, and particularly excellent in sliding characteristics in addition. SOLUTION : The wear-resistant member composed of a silicon nitride sintered compact is manufactured by mixing a silicon nitride powder containing not greater than 1.5 mass% of oxygen and 75-97 mass% of α-phase silicon nitride, and having an average particle diameter of not greater than 1.0 μm with raw materials composed of 1-10 oxide-converted mass% of a rare earth element, not greater than 5 oxide-converted mass% of at least one of Al and Mg, not greater than 5 mass% of AlN, and not greater than 5 oxide-converted mass% of at least one member selected from the group consisting of Ti, Hf, Zr, W, Mo, Ta, Nb and Cr, preparing a formed body thereof, maintaining the formed body for a predetermined time at a temperature of 1, 250-1, 600°C in a vacuum of not greater than 0.01 Pa or at a temperature of 1, 500-1, 600°C in a nitrogen atmosphere in process of sintering thereof after degreasing, actually sintering at a temperature of 1, 650-1, 850°C, and gradually cooling the sintered compact with a cooling rate of not greater than 100°C/hr, the cooling rate by which a liquid phase formed by the rare earth element when sintering becomes solid from the sintering temperature.
