PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for dry cutting of steel, which is optimal for cutting work of the steel for a product served for a die or the like. SOLUTION : A working surface of a cutting tool has a composition comprising, by mass, 1.0 to 1.6% C, 0.1 to 1.0% Si, 0.1 to 1.0% Mn, 3.0 to 5.0% Cr, one or two of W and Mo in a total amount (2Mo+W) of 15 to 20%, 2.0 to 5.0% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. In the cutting tool, major axes of the MC type carbide in the cross-sectional structure is 0.5 to 1.5 μm in average, the area ratio of the MC carbide having the major axes of 2.0 to less than 5.0 μm occupied in the cross-sectional structure is 1.5% and more, and the area ratio of the MC carbide having the major axes of 5.0 μm and more is 0 to less than 1.2%. The hardness of the cutting tool is HRC 63 to 70. The cutting method of the steel performs dry cutting of steel to be cut at the cutting speed of 90 m/min or more using the cutting tool. Preferably, the working surface of the cutting tool has the composition containing 0.2% or less Al and/or one or more kinds of rare earth elements in a total amount of 0.2% or less, and further may containing 10% or less Co.
