PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide steel for high heat input welding in which the coarsening of austenitic grains in the heat affected zone can be suppressed even under a severe welding condition in which heat input reaches >=200 kJ/cm. SOLUTION : The steel has a composition containing 0.01 to 0.15% C, 0.05 to 0.80% Si, 0.5 to 2.0% Mn and 0.01 to 0.08% Al, containing 0.015 to 0.040% Ti and 0.0045 to 0.0085% N in the ranges satisfying the inequalities of 3.5=1500 ([Ti] stands for the content (%) of Ti and [N] the content (%) of N), and further containing one or two metals selected from 0.0003 to 0.0040% Ca and 0.0010 to 0.0150% rare earth metals, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
