PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an external electrode type rare gas discharge lamp which is superior in starting characteristics, which is capable of uniform light emission in terms of place even in normal lighting afterwards and which has a high light-emitting efficiency. SOLUTION : A pair of electrodes (2a, 2b) are arranged and installed at the outer face of a glass tube (1) into which the rare gas is sealed, and a conductive material (4) is arranged at one part of the inner face of this glass tube (1). Then, in the electrode (2a), a high resistance material (6) having a higher resistance value than the resistance value of a material constituting the electrode is arranged on the outer face of the glass tube so as to carry out electrical connection to the electrode.
