PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve the properties of a magnetic powder for magnetic recording in order to obtain a magnetic recording medium suited for a high-sensitivity magnetic reading head using an MR element. ŽSOLUTION : The magnetic powder for magnetic recording suited for an MR head comprises Fe-based acicular particles containing Co, Al, and R (rare earth metals including Y) in the following ranges : Co/Fe=10 to 50 at.%, dissolved Al/(Fe+Co)=5 to 50 at.%, and R/(Fe+Co)=2 to 25 at.%, having an oxygen content of at most 25 wt.%, and having an average major axis diameter of 25 to 80 nm and a saturation magnetization σs of 10 to 130 emu/g.
