PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a homogeneous large-size oxide superconductor having excellent electric characteristics, magnetic characteristics and mechanical strength and also to provide an oxide superconductor production process by which such an oxide superconductor can be produced at a low cost. SOLUTION : This production process involves heating a raw material mixture containing an RE compound (RE is at least one of the rare earth metal elements including Y), a Ba compound and a Cu compound to a temperature higher than the melting point of the raw material mixture to melt the mixture, and thereafter, slowly cooling the molten mixture, to grown crystals on a substrate and to produce an RE- Ba-Cu-O system oxide superconductor, wherein the production process, more specifically, comprises making a precursor provided with a hole or groove formed therein from the raw material mixture, placing, on the substrate, an intermediate layer that is to be interposed between the substrate and the precursor and consists of a plurality of pellet pieces which are arranged on the substrate so as to form a space between every adjacent two of the pellet pieces in order to form such spaces below the precursor and each of which has the same composition as the precursor composition, then, placing the precursor on the intermediate layer and melting the precursor, and thereafter, slowly cooling the molten precursor to grow crystals on the substrate and to produce the objective RE-Ba-Cu-O system oxide superconductor.
