FIELD : chemistry. SUBSTANCE : invention can be used in polishing glass or materials similar to glass. An inorganic cerium salt or cerium hydroxide containing cerium in amount of 50-100% of the total content of oxides of rare-earth elements is suspended in an aqueous medium. The obtained aqueous suspension is treated with an acid or a salt of an acid selected from a group comprising HF, H3PO4 and H2SO4. Solid particles are separated from the aqueous medium, annealed at temperature 750-1200°C and ground to 0.5-5.0 mcm grains. The oxide of the rare-earth element added to the suspension can be a precursor compound, e.g. a hydroxide, chloride or nitrate of a rare-earth element. The polishing composition based on the obtained cerium dioxide contains the following in wt % : fluoride 0.5-14; phosphorus in terms of P2O5 0.5-5; sulphur in terms of SO3 0.3-5.
