PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing rare earth magnet powder which has excellent magnetic characteristics and corrosion-resistant properties. SOLUTION : The method of manufacturing the rare earth magnet powder comprises processes of preparing an alloy powder having an R-Fe-B phase first, forming a non-rare earth layer containing no rare earth metal elements substantially on all the surface or a part of the surface of each of particles of the alloy powder, and subjecting the alloy powder to a thermal treatment at temperatures of 750 to 900°C in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere. The above thermal treatment comprises a first process of subjecting the alloy powder to a hydrogenation/disproportionation treatment, and a second process of subjecting the alloy powder to a dehydrogenation/recombination treatment.
