High density hydration resistant sintered lime production, by adding a low melting compound-forming transition metal oxide and/or solid solution-forming rare earth metal oxide to calcined low impurity content limestone prior to pelletizing and sintering, is new. Production of high density hydration resistant sintered lime comprises (a) washing of limestone of less than 2% impurity content to remove impurities; (b) crushing to =25 mm size; (c) calcining at 1000-1150[deg]C for 2-3 hr.; (d) hydrating, drying and disaggregating in conventional manner; (e) adding 1-4 wt.% of a low melting compound-forming transition metal oxide and/or solid solution-forming rare earth metal oxide; (f) pelletizing at >=1000 kg/cm 2> pressure; (g) sintering at 1550-1650[deg]C for 2-4 hr.; and (h) allowing to cool.
