The preparation of pyrrole derivatives (I) comprises catalytic dehydrogenation of pyrrolidines (II) at 150-300 degrees C and 0.01-50 bar on a catalyst comprising : (1) a composite (30-100 wt.%) comprising either (i) palladium on a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide or (ii) platinum and palladium on alumina or a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide; and (2) alkali(ne earth) metal oxide (0-70 wt.%). The preparation of pyrrole derivatives of formula (I) comprises catalytic dehydrogenation of pyrrolidines of formula (II) a 150-300 degrees C and 0.01-50 bar on a catalyst comprising : (1) a composite (30-100 wt.%) comprising either (i) palladium on a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide or (ii) platinum and palladium on alumina or a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide; and (2) alkali(ne earth) metal oxide (0-70 wt.%). R-R = H, 1-12C alkyl or 3-12C cycloalkyl.
