PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide methods for making an environmental barrier coating for a ceramic component suitable to use in a high temperature water vapor environment. SOLUTION : Methods for making an environmental barrier coating involving applying a bond coat layer 14 to a ceramic component 10; applying at least one or more selected from a transition layer slurry obtained by combining at least an organic solvent, and a primary transition material selected from a rare earth disilicate, or a doped rare earth disilicate, and at least one slurry sintering aid, an outer layer slurry obtained by combining at least an organic solvent, and a primary outer material selected from a rare earth monosilicate, or a doped rare earth monosilicate, a flexible layer slurry obtained by combining at least an organic solvent, and a primary flexible material comprising BSAS, or a rare earth doped BSAS and a transition layer slurry to the ceramic component 10; and sintering the ceramic component 10 to produce the environmental barrier coating having at least the bond coat layer 14, a transition layer 16 and any of an outer layer 20 or a flexible layer 18.
