PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high pressure discharge lamp that effectively suppresses instability of a discharge arc in accordance with peculiar electrode wear and degradation of a lumen maintenance factor caused by blackening of a translucent ceramic airtight container, in a mercury-free structure wherein halide of rare earth metal belonging to lanthanoid is sealed and xenon as noble gas is sealed at a pressure of 0.5-10 atmospheres.
SOLUTION : The high pressure discharge lamp includes : the translucent ceramic airtight container 1 having an enclosure 1a having a discharge space inside and a pair of small-diameter cylinder parts 1b communicating with an inside of the enclosure and extending from both ends of the enclosure; a pair of electrodes 2 arranged so that each tip end 2b has an approximate cone shape and faces within the enclosure and each base end is inserted in the small-diameter cylinder part; and a discharge medium which does not contain mercury essentially but contains at least one type of halide of the rare earth metal belonging to the lanthanoid and xenon at a pressure of 0.5-10 atmospheres at 25°C, and is sealed inside the translucent ceramic airtight container.
