The invention relates to a water-based coating composition for surface modification on products originating in hydraulically-curing compositions, particularly of concrete or mortar, comprising : at least one modifier, an alkali-soluble polymeric binder and water. The alkali-soluble polymeric binder is decomposed in the presence of bases or water-soluble and builds in contact with alkaline earth ions from itself. The invention relates to the use of the coating agent in the positive as well as also in the application of negatives, and a backing material having thereon applied water-based coating compositions.
