The invention relates to a redox loop method characterised in that, by way of a redox mass, it uses a mass comprising a composition which contains cerium oxide and either : consists essentially of cerium oxide and at least one oxide of another rare earth, with a specific surface area of at least 20 m2/g after calcination at 1000°C for 5 hours; or which contains cerium oxide, zirconium oxide and, optionally, at least one oxide of a rare earth other than cerium.
