PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide rare-earth nanoparticles which contain divalent rare earth elements and can be easily applied to a magneto-optical material or the like. SOLUTION : There is provided a method for producing rare-earth nanoparticles which comprises a step of reacting a single rare earth element with urea in a reaction solvent containing a compound having an aliphatic group and a polar group bonded to the aliphatic group to generate rare-earth nanoparticles containing a rare earth compound represented by M(OCN)2OC(NH2)2 (M represents a rare earth element). Rare-earth nanoparticles containing a rare earth compound represented by M(OCN)2 may be generated by heating rare-earth nanoparticles containing a rare earth compound represented by M(OCN)2OC(NH2)2 (M represents a rare earth element).
