PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a negative electrode active material which includes a high capacity and can exhibit a high charge and discharge capacity and excellent cycle characteristics even under a low temperature environment, to provide a negative electrode using this negative electrode active material, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. SOLUTION : As the negative electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, a compound oxide is used which contains a rare earth element and iron, and further, contains arbitrarily at least one of transition element selected from a group of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni, and which can store and release lithium ions.
