PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for preparing a synthesis gas producing catalyst to be used when synthesis gas based on carbon monoxide and hydrogen is produced from a gaseous raw material containing a 1-5C hydrocarbon and oxygen. SOLUTION : A catalytic carrier is obtained by mixing a first component being an oxide of at least one alkaline-earth metal selected from Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba, a second component being an oxide of at least one element selected from Sc, Y and lanthanoid and a third component being a solid-electrolytic substance which consists of zirconia or is based on zirconia so that the molar ratio of the second component to the first component is 0.02-0.4 and the molar ratio of the third component to the first component is 0.04-1.5, compacting the obtained mixture and firing the compacted mixture in an air atmosphere for 2-10 hours at 950-1, 300°C. A group VIII metal is incorporated in the obtained catalytic carrier, which is then fired in the air atmosphere for 2-10 hours at 600-1, 000°C to obtain the objective catalyst on which the group VIII metal of 300-10, 000 ppm is deposited.
