PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To maintain a high capacity for a long term by suppressing oxidation and degradation of a hydrogen storage alloy used in a negative electrode and reduction of charging reserve of the negative electrode in an alkaline storage battery formed to have the high capacity by using a rare-earth-Mg-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloy in the negative electrode.
SOLUTION : The hydrogen storage alloy is used in the negative electrode. The hydrogen storage alloy is expressed by the general formula : Ln1-xMgxNiy-a-bAlaMb (wherein Ln is at least one element selected from rare earth elements including Zr, Ti, Y; M is at least one element selected from V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Cu, Si, P, B, Zr; and conditions 0.05≤x≤0.35, 0.05≤a≤0.30, 0≤b≤0.5, and 2.5≤y≤3.3 are satisfied) and is characterized in that Ln in the general formula includes Sm as its main component and the electrochemical capacity of the hydrogen storage alloy is at least 300 mAh/g.
