Disclosed is an Al-C-O phosphor which is configured from elements having high environmental suitability and excellent economical efficiency, without using a heavy metal or a rare metal. The Al-C-O phosphor can be varied in the wavelength at the peak intensity in the emission spectrum without being changed in the fundamental constitutional composition. Specifically disclosed is an aluminum oxide phosphor composed of aluminum (Al), carbon (C) and oxygen (O), which is characterized by containing Al, C and O respectively in amounts satisfying the following relations : 30% by mole < Al < 60% by mole, 0% by mole < C < 10% by mole, and 30% by mole < O < 70% by mole. When the Al-C-O phosphor composed of aluminum (Al), carbon (C) and oxygen (O) is produced, the production procedure comprises a step of heating and firing a mixture that contains an aluminum-containing compound and a coordinating oxygen-containing organic compound.
