PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a backlight unit equipped with a rare-gas fluorescent lamp with less electric power consumption and capable of improving a contrast ratio of a liquid crystal display.
SOLUTION : In the backlight unit in which the rare-gas fluorescent lamp having a pair of external electrodes arranged along a tube axis is arranged in parallel outside a light-emitting tube, and which is equipped with a driving circuit to light on the rare-gas fluorescent lamp, and a control signal generating circuit to send out a light-adjustment signal to the driving circuit, this is equipped with the driving circuit in which at least one electrode of the external electrodes of the rare-gas fluorescent lamp is divided in a tube axial direction, and connected separately and independently at every divided external electrode, and a starting electrode formed at the inner face of a tube wall in which the external electrode positioned at least at one end of the rare-gas fluorescent lamp is formed. The control signal generating circuit feeds all the external electrodes divided when the rare-gas fluorescent lamp started lighting on against the driving circuit, and after a lapse of a certain period, sends out the light-adjustment signal to dim at every divided external electrode.
