PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve battery characteristics without damaging high-temperature life characteristics in a nickel hydrogen battery using hydrogen storage alloy as an anode active material. SOLUTION : The anode active material for a nickel hydrogen battery is expressed in a general formula : Mm1-αT1αNixAlyMnzCoβT2γ (in the formula, Mm is a mixture of light rare-earth elements, T1 is an element of at least one kind selected from a group consisting of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba, T2 is an element of at least one kind selected from a group consisting of Sn, Cu, and Fe. 0.01≤α≤0.5, 2.5≤x≤4.5, 0.05≤y+z≤2.0, 0≤β≤0.6, 0≤γ≤0.6, and 5.6≤x+y+z+β+γ≤6.0).
