PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a faraday rotator constituted using a heat radiation substrate composed of a high heat-conductive material which is transparent with respect to light of about 1 μm, and has a heat conductivity of more than 100 W/mK, and also, is easily machined, such as cutting and grinding, and which is isotropic and has no birefringence, thereby, to provide a compact, low-cost faraday rotator unit.
SOLUTION : The faraday rotator is constituted by bonding the heat radiation substrate of GaP to at least one of light incident and outgoing surfaces of a bismuth substitution type rare-earth iron garnet crystal. Further, the faraday rotator unit is constituted by sandwiching the faraday rotator by holders each having a through-hole, then, inserting the holders into the center of a cylindrical magnet and forming a heat sink.
