An optical fiber 170 can efficiently excite metallic ions for example rare earths by a pump lightwave (see Figure 11), and an optical fiber amplifier and an optical fiber laser light source both incorporate the optical fiber 170. The optical fiber comprises a solid region 14 that has a first region 12 doped with metallic ions and a second region 13 surrounding the first region and that allows a lightwave for exciting the metallic ions to travel in a multiple mode. A third region 16 surrounding the second region and has a plurality of holes 15 stretching along the length of the optical fiber. The optical fiber has a structure in which the first region is placed at a position apart from the center axis of the solid region 14 such that when a pump lightwave travels through the solid region energy in a first mode is transferred to a second mode, the first mode having an intensity distribution in which the intensity decreases at the first region in the second mode also having an intensity distribution.
